Aviva Signature van insurance is Aviva's comprehensive van cover, sold either as a personal policy for social use or a business policy for sole traders and companies. It covers most vans under 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, and electric vans up to 4.25 tonnes, and carries a Defaqto 5-star rating.

How HowMuch works with Aviva

We're partnered with Quotezone.co.uk, as an Introducer Appointed Representative of Seopa Ltd (FCA FRN: 313860). Aviva is part of Quotezone's panel of insurers and is included when you run a van insurance search. Quotezone compares your details against the underwriting criteria set by Aviva, alongside every other insurer on its panel. That means a quote from Aviva isn't guaranteed on every search. It depends on how your profile matches their risk appetite on the day, along with factors like your van, postcode and driving history. Quotezone runs the comparison and includes them in the results alongside other insurers. HowMuch doesn't have a direct commercial relationship with Aviva. We receive a commission if you purchase a policy. We do not provide advice or make recommendations.

Aviva's policies

Aviva sells van insurance on a comprehensive or third party, fire and theft basis, split into personal cover for vans used only socially and business cover for vans used for work or registered to a company.

Comprehensive cover

includes:

  • Cover for loss, theft or damage to your van
  • Vehicle recovery after an accident, or up to £500 towards accommodation or public transport
  • Transport to your destination and delivery of your van to an approved repairer if it's not safe to drive
  • Tool cover up to £500 if your van is broken into and tools are stolen
  • Glass replacement for windscreens, sunroofs and windows
  • Replacement locks, transmitters and immobilisers if your keys are lost or stolen
  • A repair guarantee for as long as you own the van, even if you switch insurers

Optional extras

  • Breakdown cover, with roadside assistance, recovery, at-home and onward travel options
  • Motor legal cover, help recovering costs after a non-fault accident
  • Courtesy van, standard or enhanced replacement vehicle options (comprehensive only)
  • Foreign use cover, for driving in most European countries (comprehensive only)
  • Motor Injury Protection Plus, injury cover and physiotherapy for you and named drivers (comprehensive only)
  • Protected no claim discount, keeps your premium from rising after one claim

Who is Aviva best for?

Aviva suits tradespeople who need tool cover built into their policy, since £500 of cover for stolen tools comes as standard on comprehensive rather than as a paid extra. Its repair guarantee, which holds even if you later switch insurers, adds real value for van owners who keep their vehicle a long time. Van owners who only carry goods for their own trade should check the exclusion on business goods and samples, since Aviva's cover is built around the van itself rather than what's inside it.

What factors can affect the cost of van insurance?

Some pricing factors — like your age or driving history — are out of your control, but you can still bring down the cost of van insurance with a few smart policy choices.

Compare quotes

Shopping around could help you find a cheaper deal, as van premiums can vary widely between specialist commercial insurers.

Partnered with Quotezone

Buy early

Insurers typically offer better prices 3–4 weeks before your policy start date.

Policy choice

Buy van insurance 25+ days before renewal.

Pay annually

Insurers add interest charges to monthly instalments, making this a more expensive way to pay over the year.

Policy choice

Select annual payment if affordable.

Add a named driver

Adding experienced named drivers can lower your premium, as insurers see the policy as less risky.

Policy choice

Name experienced drivers on the policy.

Increase excess

Paying a higher voluntary excess reduces the insurer's exposure, which can lower the premium.

Policy choice

Set a higher voluntary excess you can afford.

Improve security

Adding alarms, immobilisers, trackers or parking in a secure location can reduce your premium.

Policy choice

Park overnight in a garage or secure compound where possible.

Cut add-ons

Removing add-ons you don't need or already have can lower your premium.

Policy choice

Remove cover you have separately, like breakdown.

Estimate mileage accurately

Underestimating can invalidate a policy, while overestimating can lead to higher premiums than necessary.

Policy choice

Use MOT history to gauge accurate annual mileage.

Van insurance FAQs

Yes. The nature of the work performed is a significant factor. A van used by a builder to carry tools to a single site is often viewed differently to a van used for multi-drop deliveries, where the risk of an accident in high-traffic areas is statistically higher.

Not always. Standard van insurance covers the vehicle itself, but "Tools in Transit" or "Goods in Transit" cover is often an optional add-on. It is important to check the policy summary to ensure business equipment is protected against theft or damage.

Most policies specify named drivers. While "Any Driver" policies exist, they are generally more expensive. If employees or partners need to drive the van, they must be explicitly added to the policy or meet the criteria of a fleet agreement.

Adding a business logo or sign-writing can sometimes lead to lower premiums. Many insurers view branded vans as a lower theft risk because they are more recognisable and harder for thieves to sell on quickly.

In addition to vehicle details and witness information, commercial claims may require details of any goods or tools damaged. If the van is essential for work, check if the policy provides a "like-for-like" replacement vehicle to minimise business interruption.
