The AA has been part of British motoring since 1905, but its insurance business is younger. The organisation started offering car insurance through its own brokerage in 1967, moving beyond the one-off Lloyd's policy it had arranged decades earlier. It's now the UK's largest breakdown provider, running more than 2,700 patrols, and it sells car insurance in three tiers, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with AA Underwriting Insurance Company Limited and other panel insurers underwriting the cover.

How HowMuch works with The AA

We're partnered with Quotezone.co.uk, as an Introducer Appointed Representative of Seopa Ltd (FCA FRN: 313860). The AA is part of Quotezone's panel of insurers and is included when you run a car insurance search. Quotezone compares your details against the underwriting criteria set by The AA, alongside every other insurer on its panel. That means a quote from The AA isn't guaranteed on every search. It depends on how your profile matches their risk appetite on the day, along with factors like your car, postcode and driving history. Quotezone runs the comparison and includes them in the results alongside other insurers. HowMuch doesn't have a direct commercial relationship with The AA. We receive a commission if you purchase a policy. We do not provide advice or make recommendations.

Types of car insurance cover

Comprehensive

The highest level of cover. Pays out for damage to your own car as well as third-party vehicles, theft, fire and personal injury.

Third Party, Fire & Theft

Covers damage to others, plus your own car if it is stolen or damaged by fire. Often a sensible middle ground for lower-value vehicles.

Third Party Only

The legal minimum in the UK. Pays out for damage you cause to other people's vehicles or property — nothing for your own car.

Black Box (Telematics)

Premiums based on how you drive. A device in your car tracks mileage, speed and braking. Often cheaper for young or new drivers.

  • Cover up to £750 for lost or stolen keys
  • £200 minimum excess for accidental or malicious damage
  • Motor Legal Assistance, Car Hire, Motor Accident Plan, Excess Protection and breakdown cover, all available as optional add-ons

  • 90 days of EU cover
  • Personal belongings cover up to £200
  • £100 excess for windscreen replacement, £10 for repair

Optional extras

  • Car Hire, a replacement vehicle for up to 21 days if your car is stolen and not recovered, or written off
  • Motor Accident Plan, an extra cash payment on top of standard cover if you're seriously injured or killed in an accident
  • Excess Protection, lets you claim back your policy excess once during the year, following an accidental damage, theft or fire claim
  • Breakdown Cover, adds AA roadside assistance, national recovery or at-home cover onto your car insurance policy

Who is The AA best for?

The AA suits drivers who want their insurer and their breakdown provider to be the same recognisable name. That said, the two aren't bundled automatically. Roadside assistance is a paid add-on on every tier, not a free extra, so check that before assuming it's included. Silver is the right call for drivers who just want a decent comprehensive policy at the lowest AA price point, and its 4-star Defaqto rating still beats plenty of competitors' top tier. Gold is the stronger buy for most people, since Motor Legal Assistance comes included for a modest step up in price. Platinum earns its place for drivers who'd otherwise buy Car Hire and Motor Accident Plan separately, and for anyone who wants the lowest possible excess on windscreen and key claims.

What factors can affect the cost of car insurance?

While some of the biggest factors affecting your price — like your age and driving experience — are out of your control, you can still lower your car insurance cost by making a few policy changes.

Buy early

Insurers generally offer better prices 3–4 weeks before your policy start date.

Policy choice

Buy car insurance 25+ days before renewal.

Pay annually

Insurers add interest charges to monthly instalments, making this a more expensive way to pay overall.

Policy choice

Select annual payment if affordable.

Add a named driver

Adding more experienced named drivers can lower your premium, as insurers see the policy as less risky.

Policy choice

Have additional experienced drivers named on the policy.

Increase excess

If you pay more towards any claim you reduce the insurer's risk, so they will usually drop your premium.

Policy choice

Set a higher voluntary excess you can afford.

Add driving licence

Adding your driving licence number lets insurers verify your details and assess your risk more accurately.

Policy choice

Add all driver licence numbers.

Cut add-ons

Removing add-ons you don't need or can get elsewhere will lower your premium.

Policy choice

Remove cover like breakdown if you have it elsewhere.

Drive fewer miles

Cutting back on driving where possible can lower costs, as you're a lower risk of making a claim.

Policy choice

Estimate annual mileage accurately.

Car insurance FAQs

Yes. Employment details can influence the cost. If a role requires significant time on the road, providers may view this as an increased risk. Statistically, certain occupations are associated with higher claim frequencies, which can impact the premium.

Paying in a single annual lump sum is typically the most cost-effective method. While monthly instalments can help with budgeting, they usually involve interest charges on the credit provided, making the total cost higher over the year.

Providers typically perform a "soft search" to verify details when generating quotes; this does not affect a credit score. However, a full credit check is usually required if you choose to pay via monthly instalments.

To estimate mileage, calculate weekly usage and multiply by 52, or check previous MOT certificates for an accurate historical record. Accuracy is essential: underestimating can invalidate a policy, while overestimating can lead to higher premiums than necessary.

Contact the insurance provider directly to start the process. If theft or vandalism is involved, a crime reference number from the police is required. Ensure details of other drivers and witnesses are gathered. All incidents must be reported to the insurer, even if a claim is not being pursued.
