Churchill has sold car insurance direct to UK drivers since 1989, one of the first insurers to deal with customers itself rather than through a broker. It's best known for the nodding dog, Winston, a fixture in its advertising since the 1990s. Direct Line Group owned Churchill from 2012 until Aviva completed its acquisition of Direct Line Group in July 2025, so Churchill now sits alongside Direct Line under the same parent company rather than being the same product.
How HowMuch works with Churchill
We're partnered with Quotezone.co.uk, as an Introducer Appointed Representative of Seopa Ltd (FCA FRN: 313860). Churchill is part of Quotezone's panel of insurers and is included when you run a car insurance search. Quotezone compares your details against the underwriting criteria set by Churchill, alongside every other insurer on its panel. That means a quote from Churchill isn't guaranteed on every search. It depends on how your profile matches their risk appetite on the day, along with factors like your car, postcode and driving history. Quotezone runs the comparison and includes them in the results alongside other insurers. HowMuch doesn't have a direct commercial relationship with Churchill. We receive a commission if you purchase a policy. We do not provide advice or make recommendations.
Types of car insurance cover
Comprehensive
The highest level of cover. Pays out for damage to your own car as well as third-party vehicles, theft, fire and personal injury.
Third Party, Fire & Theft
Covers damage to others, plus your own car if it is stolen or damaged by fire. Often a sensible middle ground for lower-value vehicles.
Third Party Only
The legal minimum in the UK. Pays out for damage you cause to other people's vehicles or property — nothing for your own car.
Black Box (Telematics)
Premiums based on how you drive. A device in your car tracks mileage, speed and braking. Often cheaper for young or new drivers.
Churchill's policies
Comprehensive
Churchill's standard level of cover. It protects your own car against theft, fire damage and accidental damage, and covers claims from other people for injury or damage to their property. Standard features include:
- 24-hour accident recovery
- Churchill guarantees repairs for five years when you use an approved repairer
- No Claim Discount protection option once you've built up four or more years claim-free
- New car replacement if your car is stolen and not recovered, or written off, within its first year and you're the first registered keeper
- Personal accident cover for the policyholder and their spouse or partner
- Medical expenses cover following an accident
- Cover for personal belongings left in the car
- A vandalism promise, so a vandalism claim doesn't cost you your No Claim Discount
Comprehensive Plus
Churchill's top tier of car insurance. It includes everything in Comprehensive cover, plus higher cover limits and extras that come as standard rather than optional add-ons:
- Guaranteed Hire Car Plus, a replacement car for up to 21 days if yours is stolen and not recovered, or damaged in an accident
- Motor Legal Cover, up to £100,000 in legal costs for accidents that aren't your fault
- Automatic Foreign Use, so driving abroad is covered without an extra charge
Third Party Fire and Theft
the legal minimum level of cover, worth considering mainly for older or lower-value cars. It covers:
- Injury or damage claims made against you by other people
- Fire damage to your own car
- Theft of your own car
Optional extras
- No Claim Discount Protection, protects your No Claim Discount if you've built up four or more years claim-free, covering one fault claim in the current policy year or two fault claims across the previous three years
- Motor Legal Cover, adds up to £100,000 in legal costs to pursue a claim after a non-fault accident, included as standard with Comprehensive Plus, and available to add to Comprehensive and Third Party Fire and Theft policies
- Guaranteed Hire Car Plus, provides a replacement car for up to 21 days if yours is stolen and not recovered, or damaged in an accident, standard with Comprehensive Plus, optional with Comprehensive
- Breakdown cover through Green Flag, with four levels available, from roadside-only assistance up to home start and European cover
Who is Churchill best for?
Churchill suits drivers who want a well-established comprehensive policy with strong standard benefits built in, like the five-year approved repairer guarantee and the vandalism promise, rather than a stripped-back budget option. Comprehensive Plus earns its higher premium for drivers who regularly take their car abroad or want guaranteed hire car cover included rather than added on later. It's a weaker choice for drivers chasing the cheapest possible Third Party Fire and Theft price, where budget-focused insurers usually undercut it.
What factors can affect the cost of car insurance?
While some of the biggest factors affecting your price — like your age and driving experience — are out of your control, you can still lower your car insurance cost by making a few policy changes.
Compare quotes
Shopping around could help you find a cheaper deal, as prices can vary widely between insurers.
Buy early
Insurers generally offer better prices 3–4 weeks before your policy start date.
Policy choice
Buy car insurance 25+ days before renewal.
Pay annually
Insurers add interest charges to monthly instalments, making this a more expensive way to pay overall.
Policy choice
Select annual payment if affordable.
Add a named driver
Adding more experienced named drivers can lower your premium, as insurers see the policy as less risky.
Policy choice
Have additional experienced drivers named on the policy.
Increase excess
If you pay more towards any claim you reduce the insurer's risk, so they will usually drop your premium.
Policy choice
Set a higher voluntary excess you can afford.
Add driving licence
Adding your driving licence number lets insurers verify your details and assess your risk more accurately.
Policy choice
Add all driver licence numbers.
Cut add-ons
Removing add-ons you don't need or can get elsewhere will lower your premium.
Policy choice
Remove cover like breakdown if you have it elsewhere.
Drive fewer miles
Cutting back on driving where possible can lower costs, as you're a lower risk of making a claim.
Policy choice
Estimate annual mileage accurately.

Car insurance FAQs
Yes. Employment details can influence the cost. If a role requires significant time on the road, providers may view this as an increased risk. Statistically, certain occupations are associated with higher claim frequencies, which can impact the premium.
Paying in a single annual lump sum is typically the most cost-effective method. While monthly instalments can help with budgeting, they usually involve interest charges on the credit provided, making the total cost higher over the year.
Providers typically perform a "soft search" to verify details when generating quotes; this does not affect a credit score. However, a full credit check is usually required if you choose to pay via monthly instalments.
To estimate mileage, calculate weekly usage and multiply by 52, or check previous MOT certificates for an accurate historical record. Accuracy is essential: underestimating can invalidate a policy, while overestimating can lead to higher premiums than necessary.
Contact the insurance provider directly to start the process. If theft or vandalism is involved, a crime reference number from the police is required. Ensure details of other drivers and witnesses are gathered. All incidents must be reported to the insurer, even if a claim is not being pursued.
