Aviva has been insuring UK drivers for over a century, tracing its roots back to Norwich Union's founding in 1797. The company took its current name in 2002, after Norwich Union and CGU merged to form Aviva in 2000. It's now one of the UK's largest insurers, covering more than two million motorists and holding a five-star Defaqto rating alongside Which? Recommended Provider status for its car insurance.
How HowMuch works with Aviva
We're partnered with Quotezone.co.uk, as an Introducer Appointed Representative of Seopa Ltd (FCA FRN: 313860). Aviva is part of Quotezone's panel of insurers and is included when you run a car insurance search. Quotezone compares your details against the underwriting criteria set by Aviva, alongside every other insurer on its panel. That means a quote from Aviva isn't guaranteed on every search. It depends on how your profile matches their risk appetite on the day, along with factors like your car, postcode and driving history. Quotezone runs the comparison and includes them in the results alongside other insurers. HowMuch doesn't have a direct commercial relationship with Aviva. We receive a commission if you purchase a policy. We do not provide advice or make recommendations.
Types of car insurance cover
Comprehensive
The highest level of cover. Pays out for damage to your own car as well as third-party vehicles, theft, fire and personal injury.
Third Party, Fire & Theft
Covers damage to others, plus your own car if it is stolen or damaged by fire. Often a sensible middle ground for lower-value vehicles.
Third Party Only
The legal minimum in the UK. Pays out for damage you cause to other people's vehicles or property — nothing for your own car.
Black Box (Telematics)
Premiums based on how you drive. A device in your car tracks mileage, speed and braking. Often cheaper for young or new drivers.
Aviva's policies
Third party, fire and theft
Aviva's minimum level of cover. It pays out if you injure someone or damage their vehicle or property, and it covers theft or fire damage to your own car. It does not cover damage to your own car if you're at fault in an accident.
Aviva Standard
- Loss or damage to your car from theft, accidental damage or fire, based on its market value
- Liability cover for injury or damage you cause to others
- Uninsured driver cover, protecting your no-claims discount and refunding your excess
- Vehicle recovery and onward travel if your car isn't driveable after an accident
- Cover to drive other cars if you're the policyholder, 25 or over, and have the owner's permission
- Windscreen cover, personal belongings cover and a courtesy car while yours is repaired
- £5,000 of motor injury protection for you, your partner or named drivers
Aviva Gold
everything in Standard, plus:
- Legal cover following an accident that wasn't your fault
- Personal belongings cover rises to £300
- Disrupted journey cover rises to £300
- European cover extends to 90 days a year, 30 days more than Standard
Aviva Platinum
everything in Gold, plus:
- Personal belongings cover of £400 and disrupted journey cover of £500
- Breakdown cover built into the policy, including roadside repair if you break down away from home
- A five-door courtesy car, rather than the three-door offered on Standard and Gold
Optional extras
- No Claim Discount protection, keeps years of built-up discount intact even after a claim that was your fault
- Motor legal services, up to £100,000 towards legal costs after an accident that wasn't your fault, covering you, named drivers and passengers
- Courtesy car, a replacement car if yours is damaged, written off or stolen, only available with comprehensive cover
- Motor Injury Protection Plus, increases the standard £5,000 injury cover to £120,000 and adds physiotherapy after a road accident, only available with comprehensive cover
- UK breakdown cover, roadside assistance and recovery, buy alongside your policy or on its own
- Foreign use, extends your cover for driving in Europe beyond the standard third-party-only minimum, for trips of up to 90 days
Who is Aviva best for?
Aviva suits drivers who want an established, well-rated insurer and are prepared to pay for strong cover limits rather than chase the cheapest quote. The Gold and Platinum tiers make sense for higher-mileage drivers who spend time on European roads or want breakdown cover built into the policy rather than bought separately. Aviva is not usually the cheapest option for new or young drivers, so anyone prioritising price over cover limits should compare quotes before committing.
What factors can affect the cost of car insurance?
While some of the biggest factors affecting your price — like your age and driving experience — are out of your control, you can still lower your car insurance cost by making a few policy changes.
Compare quotes
Shopping around could help you find a cheaper deal, as prices can vary widely between insurers.
Buy early
Insurers generally offer better prices 3–4 weeks before your policy start date.
Policy choice
Buy car insurance 25+ days before renewal.
Pay annually
Insurers add interest charges to monthly instalments, making this a more expensive way to pay overall.
Policy choice
Select annual payment if affordable.
Add a named driver
Adding more experienced named drivers can lower your premium, as insurers see the policy as less risky.
Policy choice
Have additional experienced drivers named on the policy.
Increase excess
If you pay more towards any claim you reduce the insurer's risk, so they will usually drop your premium.
Policy choice
Set a higher voluntary excess you can afford.
Add driving licence
Adding your driving licence number lets insurers verify your details and assess your risk more accurately.
Policy choice
Add all driver licence numbers.
Cut add-ons
Removing add-ons you don't need or can get elsewhere will lower your premium.
Policy choice
Remove cover like breakdown if you have it elsewhere.
Drive fewer miles
Cutting back on driving where possible can lower costs, as you're a lower risk of making a claim.
Policy choice
Estimate annual mileage accurately.

Car insurance FAQs
Yes. Employment details can influence the cost. If a role requires significant time on the road, providers may view this as an increased risk. Statistically, certain occupations are associated with higher claim frequencies, which can impact the premium.
Paying in a single annual lump sum is typically the most cost-effective method. While monthly instalments can help with budgeting, they usually involve interest charges on the credit provided, making the total cost higher over the year.
Providers typically perform a "soft search" to verify details when generating quotes; this does not affect a credit score. However, a full credit check is usually required if you choose to pay via monthly instalments.
To estimate mileage, calculate weekly usage and multiply by 52, or check previous MOT certificates for an accurate historical record. Accuracy is essential: underestimating can invalidate a policy, while overestimating can lead to higher premiums than necessary.
Contact the insurance provider directly to start the process. If theft or vandalism is involved, a crime reference number from the police is required. Ensure details of other drivers and witnesses are gathered. All incidents must be reported to the insurer, even if a claim is not being pursued.
