How to Apply for a Business Credit Card

Applying for a business credit card takes around ten minutes if you have the right information to hand. The thing that slows most people down is not the application itself but gathering the details beforehand. Get these ready in advance and the process moves quickly.

Who can apply

Most UK business structures are eligible: sole traders, partnerships, limited companies, and limited liability partnerships (LLPs). You do not need to be an established business. Many providers will consider applications from new businesses and startups, though the credit terms available to newer businesses are often more conservative than those for businesses with a longer track record.

The minimum requirements across most UK providers are that you are 18 or over, a UK resident, and that the card will be used for business purposes. Beyond that, the criteria vary by provider. Some high street banks require you to hold a business current account with them before they will issue a business credit card. Fintech providers generally do not.

What information you will need

Get these details together before you start an application:

Business information:

  • Full legal business name

  • Registered business address

  • Companies House registration number (limited companies only)

  • Business structure (sole trader, partnership, limited company, LLP)

  • Date your business started trading

  • Annual turnover (an estimate is usually acceptable)

  • Business sector or industry

Personal information (for the primary applicant):

  • Full name and date of birth

  • Home address history for the past three years

  • Personal income (some providers ask for this; others do not)

If your business has multiple directors or partners, some providers will also ask for details on others above a certain ownership threshold, typically 25%.

The application process

Most providers let you apply online, and the steps are similar across them.

Start with an eligibility check if one is available. Capital on Tap and several other providers offer a soft credit search before you commit to a full application. This tells you whether you are likely to be approved without leaving a hard search mark on your credit file. It takes a couple of minutes and is worth doing.

Fill in the online application form. This typically takes ten to fifteen minutes. You will be asked for your business and personal details as listed above.

The provider then runs a credit check. For most small business applications, this covers both the business and the primary applicant personally. If you are a sole trader, it will be primarily a personal credit check.

Many providers give an instant decision online. Others, particularly for larger credit limits or more complex business structures, take longer. If the provider needs more information, they will contact you by phone or email.

Once approved, many providers issue a virtual card number immediately. You can use this online or add it to Apple Pay or Google Pay before your physical card arrives. Physical cards typically take three to seven working days.

After the decision

If you are approved, your credit limit is set at that point. For smaller businesses and first-time applicants, limits are often lower than expected. Most providers have a review process after three to six months of responsible use, and limits can increase from there without you needing to apply again.

If you are declined, the hard credit check from the application will remain on your file for up to twelve months. Applying to multiple providers in quick succession makes this worse, because each decline adds another mark. If you are declined, pause before applying elsewhere. Check your credit report, identify any issues, and address them before trying again.

Some providers give reasons for a decline. Use that information if it is offered. A decline based on a thin credit file is a different problem from one based on adverse history, and the approach to fixing each is different.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an existing business bank account to apply?

It depends on the provider. Some high street banks, including Barclays and HSBC, require you to hold a business current account with them first. Fintech providers like Capital on Tap do not have this requirement. If you do not yet have a business bank account, a fintech provider is the more accessible route.

How long does approval take?

Many online providers give an instant decision. Applications that need manual review, usually because of a more complex business structure or a credit profile requiring closer assessment, can take a few days. There is no universal standard across providers.

Does applying for a business credit card affect my personal credit score?

The initial soft eligibility check does not. The full application, which involves a hard credit search, does leave a footprint on your file. For sole traders especially, this will appear on your personal credit file. Space out applications if you are comparing providers rather than applying to all of them at once.

What credit limit should I expect?

First-time applicants typically receive limits of £500 to £5,000. Established businesses with strong credit can be approved for higher limits from the outset. Providers often increase limits automatically after three to six months of on-time repayments.

Can I add employees to the card?

Most business credit cards allow you to issue supplementary cards to employees. You remain liable for all spending on the account. Providers differ on how many employee cards they will issue, whether there is a fee for additional cards, and what spend controls you can set per card. Check these details before you apply if employee cards are a priority for your business.
